Yes, I like Jack McDevitt and this one is one of his best.
That people will revere the written word under these circumstances is most probable. Lists with This Book.
They have no contact with other parts of the world, though, and very little knowledge of their pre-apocalyptic ancestors, the Roadmakers. But they do possess a couple of copies of a book, The Travels of Abraham Polkpurportedly written in the immediate aftermath of the plague that destroyed the previous civilization, which describes the creation of a place of refuge called Haven, where the secrets of the Roadmakers are preserved. Just keep in mind you may be very disappointed by the end.
He also, IMO, deserves credit for very full-orbed development of the back-story of Abraham Polk and the October patrol, so much so that initially, I actually thought this book was a sequel to a previous novel about Polk, though that isn’t the case.
Refresh and try again. Feb 01, Space rated it liked it Shelves: Get Known if you don’t have an account. Sounds like a great idea and many like the book. It is a story where death comes in logical, but surprising ways.
McDevitt structures his story around the classic quest motif. There’s a great book in here somewhere, but the one that made it to print isn’t it. Some years after the collapse of modern American civilization, some civilized but low-tech city states thrive in the lower Mississippi Valley.
When a copy of Mark Twain ‘s novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court is discovered in roar estate of the sole survivor of an earlier expedition to the north, a young woman named Chaka Milana, whose brother died in the previous expedition almost a mcdevigt ago, decides to gather a band of explorers and try to find Haven, a legendary stronghold where the knowledge of mankind is said to have been collected and kept safe for future generations.
So we are to believe that not only was most of humanity wiped out by a virus that spread and killed so quickly nobody had time to react, jakc that these super advanced humans whose trains and power systems still work to some degree after centuries unmaintained left behind practically no stories or records of their life in written or electronic form.
It’s the far future, long After the End. They don’t have any use for our buildings either. There were many missed opportunities for this book to soar. By the by, McDevitt has won, or been nominated for, a number of prestigious Science Fiction awards: Over the years, the hint of eterniy rumor remains.
Easy, beach or airplane reading. It leaves a jarring impression. Across the way, they encounter pirates, tribes people, and a number of A. While the general concept of this book a journey through a post-apocalyptic world has been used many times before, it’s how it is told that counts.

McDevitt does, but it’s more of one of those ones where you sort of nod and say “Ah. Turns out it was a plague after all. It’s an interesting premise. Their concrete highways still cross the continent. Yes, post-apocalyptic stories are legion and only a few seem to rise to the top i. But it wasn’t good fun.
You can help Wikipedia by expanding it. It’s hard to explain. This is my first time reading this author’s work. But in terms of caring about the characters, their stories, or their lives, I just could not get that involved in them. It’s a fairy tale land that might not even exist. View my complete profile.
Jack McDevitt does just that. A previous expedition east of the Mississippi learned nothing and there was only one survivor. Not every books needs a damn romance, especially if it’s just pasted on for a little extra word count.
The literate minority were regarded with something equivalent to awe and there was a social stigma attached wternity those who could not read and write.
